Why Do Wedding RSVPs Have An M? – Ask Wedding Experience

It’s time for Ask Wedding Experience, where we answer (or do our best to answer) your most pressing wedding-related questions, no matter how weird OR common they might be.  Today, we’re focusing on a question that seems silly but comes up frequently.  That question is, why do wedding RSVPs have an M on them? The Wedding Experience team takes its best shot at giving you the answer below.

Wait, what do you mean why do wedding RSVPs have an M?

If you’ve never noticed, traditional wedding RSVPs will often feature a capitalized or stylicized M at the beginning of the blank name field.  While people may think that this is some elaborate wedding tradition from days gone by, it’s more simple.  The M generally is meant to be the beginning of your formal title.  It’s meant to be the first letter of Mr, Ms, or Mrs.  Often, a follow-up question would be why has this been the case in the first place? Our best answer is – we’re not sure, other than perhaps as a reminder to include a full formal title when responding.

Regardless of its origin, all you need to do when faced with this quandary is simple.  If you are attending solo, simply write “Mr. James Hudson” or “Ms. Anna Fleming” on the line, with the M already included.  If you are a married couple, you’ll respond with “Mr. and Mrs. Casey Tucker”.

Of course, with the advent of online RSVPs, this is one of many wedding traditions that may become obsolete.  However, if you are still curious about other RSVP-related etiquette questions, we recommend checking out this helpful post from RSVPify which outlines a number of dos and don’ts when dealing with either traditional print or online RSVPs.  And feel free to submit further questions for Ask Wedding Experience in the comment field below!
